About

.

Hi there! I'm Sarah Buchholz and since 2019 I work as an independent artist.
My paintings are all about exploring new worlds with a tribute to escapism, melancholy and the beauty in nature.

I’m born in “the most eastern town of Germany”, a small city called Görlitz and studied Literature for 5 years in Erfurt. Since 2018 I live and work in Leipzig.

In my free time I love to travel, go out dancing and bouldering with friends.

For more insights into my process I made the following FAQ for you:

Art Journey & Technique

  • I mainly draw on the iPad Pro (2017, 12,9 inch) with the Apple Pencil and the drawing app Procreate. Before 2018 I worked with a Wacom Intuos Pro and Adobe Photoshop. For traditional sketching I like to work with graphite pencils and when it comes to watercolors, I have used a small „Watercolor Travel kit“ for many years.

  • I use a handful of brushes, that are all included in the basic procreate brush library.

    My favorites are:

    Sketching: „Mechanical Pencil“, HB Pencil

Basic: Niko Rull, Hard Round Brush

Texture: Stuck, Gesinki ink, shale brush, Aurora, Dry Brush

    Light Effects: Airbrush, Lightpencil

  • Because many details are an essential part of my art style, I always need a long time. Time can vary between 20 to even 80 hours for one artwork. The concept sketch takes me 1-2 hours maximum, for the linework I plan in 2-5 hours, so rendering out the main elements is what needs most time. The complex environments usually take me about 40-60 hours on average.

  • As a child, I got nearly all of my inspiration from nature and I loved to draw very detailed sceneries of animals in their natural environment with colored pencils.

At the age of 13, I proudly bought my first drawing tablet and started learning how to paint with Photoshop from tutorials on Youtube and Deviantart. In the drawings I made during my teenage years, you can see a significant style influence from anime and manga. If you are interested, here is a detailed overview of my improvement.

Inventing new worlds and imagining what fictional places could look like, is what I love most about creating art. It was at this point, that I aimed to become a concept artist for movies and video games.

But in 2012 it seemed to me, that there were not many possibilities to work in that field unless I would pay a lot of money for a private school for cinematic art & concept design. I couldn’t afford that and because of several negative experiences that I had with art teachers in school, I knew that I would never ever go to art school.

Thats’ why I decided to study "comparative literature“ at University Erfurt to learn more about storytelling. Unfortunately, it didn’t meet my expectations at all. But regardless of all the failures that I experienced in my early twenties, success came unexpectedly in the form of a colorful geeky weekend in December 2016.

I didn’t know what to expect when I applied for a table in the Artist Alley at the first German Comic-Con. On the first day, I was already sold out and the people I met there gave me a boost of confidence that would last for months afterwards.

When I was still studying at university, I applied for more and more conventions, improved my booth setup and built a website with an online shop.

I never had a lot of confidence or trust in myself, but when I was able to make a stable living from my art by the age of 25, I started to call myself a „Professional Artist“ for the first time. Even with my beloved conventions being cancelled for more than a year due to the COVID pandemic, I'm very grateful for the job that I didn't even know existed.

  • Broadly, I would say nature and other artists work inspire me the most. As you may know, I’m a huge fan of the artists behind Studio Ghibli as well as everything Makoto Shinkai created. What I love most about their creations is the eye for detail, the simplicity, and the highly skilled craft in it.

Generally speaking, every artwork, photo, or movie scene with an extraordinary mood inspires me, along with a great or unusual composition or a very well-executed technique.

My favorite artists (besides the Ghibli artists), that never fail to inspire me, are:

Zheng Wei Gu “Guweiz“, Sibylline Meynet, Mona Finden, Wang Ling (Wlop), Jae-Cheol Park, also known as „Paperblue“ and Kyoung Hwan Kim, „Tahra Art“.

And for the old masters, it’s definitely: Caspar David Friedrich, Vincent Van Gogh, and Gustav Klimt.

A great source of inspiration for me is pop culture media. For example, I love the world-building and the character arcs in „Avatar the Last Airbender“. Additionally, I admire the safari adventures and cute creatures from the Pokémon Universe, the dark tone in the „Death Note“ series, and for years, I was highly addicted to the tragic destinies the characters suffered in „The Walking Dead“.

Also, I found that creating my own world and storyline is highly inspiring as well. There’s just something about getting lost in another world. Whenever I need to fill a plot-hole or come up with a new character concept, I put on the right music and ideas spark easily.
